...is a role model and leads by example
Transformational leaders lead by example not by virtue of their title. They ‘walk the walk’, building confidence in their team and generating respect and trust. They act with integrity only getting people to do what they would be prepared to do themselves. Behaving in this way will encourage their team to emulate their behaviour.
...creates an inspiring vision for a specific project or future plans
Transformational leaders understand their organisation’s strengths, its direction and its competitors. Their leadership is passionate, proactive, problem-solving and forward-thinking. They create visions that are realistic, convincing, prioritised and compelling to others.
...motivates and inspires people to engage with the vision
Transformational leaders communicate their vision and strategy clearly to their colleagues and work hard throughout a project to inspire and engage others to achieve its goals. They set clear expectations for results and sell the benefits and rewards to colleagues. Leaders draw on their power sources to ensure everyone is focused. They celebrate success.
...oversees the delivery of the vision
Transformational leaders must ensure that the work needed to deliver the vision is properly managed by the managers they delegate to and overseen by them through clear objectives. They encourage creativity and innovation and challenge assumptions. They explore new ways of doing things and encourage individuals to think independently and share ideas.
...coaches and encourages the team so that it can work efficiently and achieve the vision
Transformational leaders place a high priority on understanding team dynamics and supporting and encouraging individual team members. They ensure people have the necessary skills and achieve the vision through training and coaching. They encourage open dialogue and feedback so that everyone feels valued and understood. They are not afraid to delegate and or see other team members flourish.
